Stacking trays
These stacking trays made from wood. These are designed for smaller summer mason bees that frequent gardens from May to September. The trays have 24 tunnels, to accommodate up to 24 bees and 200 eggs. The trays slip easily into any BeeDiverse Mason Bee House.

These Nesting Trays have small tunnels specially sized for summer mason bees. The tunnels are 4mm (5-32nd inch) in diameter. Each tray has routered, lengthwise grooves. When stacked the trays form tunnels where the bees nest and lay their eggs. In the fall, you can gently pop the trays apart and for a close up look at the nests and cocoons.

The trays are modular – just add more trays to increase your mason bee population.

Corrugated wrap provides nesting cavities for the smaller summer mason bees.

Nesting cavities are 3-4mm in height and 4mm in width – perfect for the tiny summer mason bees. Corrugated wrap is easy to use and the cost is right. In the spring set roll of corrugated wrap with its nesting holes horizontal, inside a weather proof home. Directions: Place Insect Hotel in a sunny location out of direct rain and wind. East or south facing walls work best. Place it where you can watch insects at the Insect Hotel.

The red predator guard and screen will deter predators such as wood-peckers and mice.

 

Once bees emerge, they will find their nesting tunnel and begin pollinating flowers.

This box is well constructed and will provide good protection from both weather and pests. The clasp securely closes the lid to the box.

These well-constructed SHELTERS are made from pine and varnished to withstand the elements. Hang onto a wall with a screw as provided or place on a shelf close to the nest. Each shelter will hold 100 or more mason bee cocoons.

It ensures sufficient humidity which is important to their survival.

Inside the styrofoam box are two chambers:one for bee cocoons and the other for moisture pads to which water is added. A hole is puched through the lid to create air circulation. When lid closes the chamber, a high humidity chamber with good air circulation has been created. Lack of air circultion causes mold development ( does not cause mortality and easy to remove with bleach if necessary).

Then the whole chamber is set into a fridge and the level of water is checked and water is added if necessary.

Big-Leaf Maple On quick growing branches and suckers, it is pretty easy to get nice round, smooth stock. Although the bark starts green, it dries to a nice brown. The ones with the huge leaf scars add interest.	Birch The golden brown, nicely patterned bark makes really attractive handles. Some stems have many branches. These are from ice storm debris, ongoing supply uncertain.	Flowering Plum This is my favorite choice for hard- working handles. This deep colored furrowed bark wraps the densest wood used.
Hazel Hazel bark is a warm brown color and is distinctive.	Red Alder The lichens that form on alders at a very young age provide a unique “camouflage” pattern to every piece. When adjacent lichen colonies mark their boundaries with fine, black lines, it adds to the precision of the ‘painting’. I have left small bits of the more leaf-like lichens on a few for interest.	Unknown This light porous wood with the great texture also comes from ice storm debris. No idea what it is , or if I will ever find more.

At the same time as harvesting cocoons the scoop scrapes out dirt and debris from nesting trays. This makes it much easier to clean the nests once the cocoons are removed.

Safely Store mason bee cocoons through the winter months

The perfect solution to safely storing cocoons inside the fridge or outdoors location.

Includes:

• 3 Petri dishes, 6” diameter

After removing mason bee cocoons from nesting tunnels, and cleaning and drying them, store cocoons in these handy containers.

• can also be used to hold ‘duds’- cocoons suspected NOT to contain a bee, but parasitic wasps or other organisms.
• are easily stacked and take a minimal amount of room.
• are specifically designed to safely hold life organisms.
• allow air and moisture to flow into the dishes without allowing debris, dust and foreign organisms to enter the dish.
• Each petridish will hold about 200 cocoons, one layer thick.

Dimensions: 6 inches in diameter and half inch high. Petri dishes are made out of clear Plastic for easy viewing and cleaning.

Easy-Check Thermometers (two).

This easy-to-read thermometer can be used anywhere your cocoons are stored. If they are stored in a fridge, place one thermometer on the upper shelf and one on the lower shelf.

Includes:

• 2 Fridge thermometers

This thermometer makes it easy to check on the temperature in a fridge or in outside locations.

• When overwintering cocoons inside a fridge, hang one from the upper shelf and the other on a lower shelf for easy viewing. Because temperatures can be different in the upper and lower section of the fridge, it is handy to have two thermometers to make sure temperatures are within the correct temperature range. During winter months keep temperature above freezing – between 35-42F or 2-6C. After January keep temperature below 36F or 4C and above freezing (34F or 4C)
• Set thermometers where you have mason bee homes located.
• When using a yurt structure, it is great to see temperature differences between the inside and outside of the yurt.

Before use, check new thermometer temperature readings against the temperature readings of a known thermometer.

Black electrician’s tape is a wonderful product  for holding nests together right through the seasons. This tape is easy to undo in the fall at harvest time.

This very versatile tape works great for:

• wrapping Quicklock nesting trays
• wood nesting trays
• nesting tubes (cardboard and natural Phragmites reed).

Included: 100 vials + lids (cocoons not included)

Vials are brown, semi-tansparent, with a white snap-on lid.

Drill hole in lid, fill vial with cocoons, close vial with lid, cover hole with tape, and add a label.

These finely woven mesh bags protect Mason Bee cocoons from parasitic wasps and other insects while cocoons are in storage from summer to winter. Includes:

No-Wasp Net Bags are generously sized with an extra-wide, draw-string opening. The bags have room for stacked nesting trays and Mason Bee Houses with the cocoons inside. Place trays and houses in the bag, draw it closed, and the cocoons are safe from pests. Staying pest-free means viable cocoons come spring.

No-Wasp Bags are an important part of keeping a healthy Mason Bee population from year to year. Bags are washable and fold flat for storage. A great buy with 3 to a pack.

Design Principles Protection from pests is two-fold.
(1) Parasitic wasps and other pests will be attracted to the nest but will not be able to enter the bag and nest.
(2) Parasitic wasps that are previously in the nest will develop and come out to find additional bee cocoons, but first wasps have to leave their nesting chamber and mate. While they are trapped inside the netting, mist-spray them with a mild soapy solution. This will kill these wasps that are flying around inside the net bag.
