Leafcutter bee Kit now available.

We now have available, both the Chalet and Highrise with specifically designed nests for the leafcutter bee.  In addition, the Chalet and one of the Highrises, also has the cardboard wrap for the other small summer mason bees. With or without bees, this refuge and nesting site is a boon for increasing your summer pollinators.  At this time leafcutter bees are availabe in Canada only.

Hello Dr. Dogterom, I am looking at your new products for summer bees and have a couple of questions. Are the quicklock trays for Leafcutter bees different from the ones used for Mason Bees? (size of holes, material – corn quicklock). Can the Mason bee corn quicklock trays be used for Leafcutters? I see that in order to harvest cocoons, you use a “plug pusher” to get them out (which suggests that the slabs don’t open up the same as for Mason Bees.) How many leafy cocoons would be laid in the tunnel? Only one? Also, if I order leafcutter cocoons, do they just arrive in the mail??? I am planning on putting together a small “insect hotel” and will be using some of your products as well as adapting and/or constructing parts of it myself. I would like to attract leafcutters, other small summer bees, etc. Thanks! 🙂 Nora

Hi Nora- Quick lock trays are only for spring mason bees.large holes (7.5mm) for large bee. the smaller leafcutter bees use nest holes with a diameter of 6mm. Commercial nests are made out of styrofoam and because leafcutter bee cocoons are sturdy, these can be pushed out of the nesting tunnels at the end of the year. There are about 6-10 leafcutter bee cocoons in a 6″ tunnel. Yes leafcutter bees are mailed out. No problem. as of 16th June- we still have leafcutter bees in stock.
